Art Basel 2019: Pulse Miami Beach

Art Basel returns to Miami Beach (December 5-8, 2019) once again serving as a centerpiece for the biggest week of art in the USA. If you haven’t been before (or haven’t heard of it before), don’t worry, you’re not alone. Last year I quickly covered the basic gist of Art Basel — regardless, it is an experience. And with social media bringing to light so many things this country has to offer, Art Basel should definitely be a bucket list item to experience! So I suggest you arm yourself with a strong Cuban cafecito before starting Art Basel, it is quite the art journey.

There are so many questions around Art Basel, especially with the infamous $120,000 banana (that I felt was all people could talk about) quickly became viral. Although Vogue does a great job at explaining the banana piece, titled Comedian, by Maurizio Cattelan. True”old-school” Art Baselers question if Art Basel Miami is still fun — meanwhile I am here to say that I personally still enjoy attending. Its an accumulation of public art and installations, events, parties, and of course, the fairs — big fairs like Art Basel, small fairs, satellite fairs like PULSE and Scope, and everything else that could be even loosely described as art. This year I had the pleasure of touring through the different art fairs as press — which may seem small, but it was a first time achievement on my end!

Pulse Miami Beach

Moving on to PULSE Art Fair, which is more up north on Miami Beach (a bit similar to Scope). Pulse is also right on the beach and boardwalk, near the Foutainbleau Hotel. It was a jam-packed day running from Scope to PULSE, but I was on a time crunch having missed most of Art Basel (full-time Architect over here lol).  Art Basel has come to encompass art events all over Miami. Technically, Basel is what happens in the convention center, but I love PULSE, especially this year. It truly was an escape from the mania of Art Basel. For its 15th year anniversary, PULSE theme was “calms in the palms” as they described it to be “an oasis of calm in the rough seas of Miami Art Week.” — which I must say it truly was. First thing you see is the tank parked right outside the entrance, but inside it was (not as crowded as Scope) all beachy “vybes” of CBD-infused cocktails and relaxing hammocks among the art and waterfront setting. Each art fair has its own vibe, with a different experience — that is the beauty of Miami art week.

Of course the first highlight at PULSE was Ralph Ziman’s SPOEK 1 sitting right by the entrance. It’s a restored 11-ton decommissioned, apartheid-era Casspir vehicle. The Casspir has been transformed into a work of art, its surfaces covered in 70 million elaborate and brightly-colored glass beads, arrayed in panels of traditional patterns. Aside from the giant 1970s tank, my absolute favorite pieces were the Le Travail est Un Art Series by @PrinceJyesi. Which I actually came across his “Projection” piece on Instagram before, I remember taking a screenshot, it was absolutely beautiful. So it was quite the pleasant surprise to see it in person, along with the rest of Le Travail est Un Art series of vibrant colors and African beauty.

“Love by The Yard” series (by Vicky Barranguet) featured long paintings, almost tapestry-like scrolls, of acrylic on canvas, where you become a part of Vicky’s world. Becoming a part of the artistic process is exactly what this artist hoped for. Which I think she succeeded because even one of my followers DM’d me saying it was satisfying to watch. Whether you look at it up, down, or sideways, Barranguet’s paintings drew me in, in a very lyrical and spirited manner.

“ Art is about love and emotions… we certainly cannot buy or sell love, patience, kindness, solidarity, compassion. [Art] contains essential values, contrast, darkness and light, dreams, reality and life.” — Vicky Barranguet

That was all Day 1 of Art Basel 2019 (at least for me, because I was late!!). It was a crazy hell of a day, but I loved it all. PULSE 2019 did not disappoint. Aside from the art, of course, Miami Beach can do no wrong — we lunched, we danced, we went out for dinner. Art Basel as a whole is an experience. (Which bears far better fruit than a banana…)

Travel Guide: Savannah, GA to Charleston, SC

Who would’ve known that Savannah & Charleston were considered “rival sister cities”. I’ve always heard how amazing these two cities were, so why not take a road trip explore. Both are best known for historical beauty, gardens, historic buildings predating the Civil War. Yet Charleston and Savannah offer much more than their picture-ready cobblestone streets and classical architecture. The historic homes, galleries, and restaurants can all be experienced on foot (or bike), but to get from one city to another is a 2-hour drive.

Things to do:

  • Forsyth Park (Savannah)

  • River Street Sweets (Savannah)

  • Haunted Tours (Savannah)

  • SCAD (Savannah)

  • Rainbow Row (Charleston)

  • Horse Carriage Ride (Charleston)

Where to eat:

  • The Collins Quarters (Savannah)

  • The Grey (Savannah)

  • Magnolias (Charleston)

I have never really been on a road-trip but somehow, someway, my husband convinced me to make the drive up from Florida to New York — stopping by Savannah and Charleston on the way. Took us about 7 hours to get to Savannah so we left at 1 am to make the most of our day (crazy, I know). A car full of snacks, music, and “alternating” drivers (I drove for an hour). Savannah is one of the most romantic cities in the US. Its historic district is only more romantic with its horse-drawn carriages and storybook mansions that predate the Civil War…

Using Rent The Runway Like A Pro

I’ve been joking lately that you really need to stalk the New Arrivals page at Rent the Runway just to get to pieces first before they’re worn A TON — only to realize many of my friends hadn’t thought of it before. If you’re an RTR member, you’re probably just as obsessed as I am!

Search by "New Arrivals" first.

Every Saturday, Rent the Runway drops new items in its collection—a mix of seasonal clothing as well as accessories. I suggest allowing notifications from RTR on your phone so that you get the pop-up to search as soon as it opens up. Often times, all four of my items will come from New Arrivals that week. You'll not only have fresher designs people haven't checked out yet, but also will typically get clothes that still have the tags on, untouched.

Choose items that don't have a ton of reviews.

Same principle as above, even if an item isn't one of the "new" ones, if you check it out and it doesn't have hundreds of photos of women wearing the piece and thousands of reviews, it's probably a piece that hasn't been worn a ton.

Lean into picking separates.

I don't own a lot of dresses and jumpsuits, and RTR was a great, easy way to experiment with wearing things I would've never bought. That said, one-pieces are usually the most popular and likely to be similarly styled by other people. Opting instead for tops, pants, skirts, etc. to mix in with your own clothes and accessories allows you more possibilities (and less chances to get your outfit IDed as another RTR item). The other day ELLE's Beauty Director Katie Becker was wearing this orange knitted, double slit skirt I immediately fell in love with. When she told me it was RTR, I—someone who has combed through thousands of RTR pages—was totally surprised.

Hold on to items for longer.

ELLE.com's Style Director Nikki Ogunnaike jokingly mentioned that her tip is to "just hold on to things so no one else can get it," but she makes a smart point! One of my favorite times to use RTR is during the winter, when I would hold on to incredible coats (some with a retail value of well over $2,000) for weeks, or even a whole month, at a time. Coats are expensive, so it saved me a ton of money to not have to buy any all season, and allowed me to experiment with more out-there designs (faux fur! Color blocking! Giant puffers!) instead of my usual, safe, boring black coats.

Favor solid-colored clothing.

Patterns are wonderful but really memorable (I can't tell you the number of times I've seen the same yellow floral dress on the subway). If you really want to pass off an RTR piece as your own, the easiest way is to go for something that's nondescript and could've been from any designer. I also tend to like solid-colored items because they're easy to style.

And if you happen to be new to Rent the Runway, welcome!

I love the service and just to get you started here’s a promo code for $200 off your first two months of Unlimited ($100 off each month). The biggest discount you’ll find, from $159 to $59 (+ tax)! — RTRNORA

An Affordable Thanksgiving Table

An attempt at “high style, low budget” using items I could find on hand to create a last-minute Friendsgiving dinner table. If there is one time of year I like to take the time to create a tables it’s THE HOLIDAYS, aka Thanksgiving and Christmas! So when my budget and time is tight, I make use of what I have to the best I can. Using apples and lemons (some from apple picking) I went for a “gatherings” aesthetic.

I have been obsessed with my matte black plates, but this can be done with any plate color. Just stack them up and place utensils.

The Line-Up

Simple, easy-to-find items to create an affordable table spread ready for a Friendsgiving table.

The Set-Up

First things first, set up the place mats, plates, utensils, etc… and make sure it all fits on the table. I love layers for the holidays, I always think more is more, so I layer up on plates and the number of utensils.

  • If I had more time, I would have added napkins with a personalized card!

The burlap runner is the “centerpiece” of the table, where I placed the garland leaves across it. I put the pampas grass stems from my yard (it can be any fall florals) into the milk jugs and placed them across the table. Then mixing the different colored apples + lemons throughout the burlap runner.

To mix it up a bit I added some random decor — candle holders and tea candles. Some marble bowls holding table salt and metallic coasters.

  • Use metallic to add extra sparkle to a table that’s missing “something”.
